New Zealand take First Baseball Win in Australia

Victoria who was placed third in the standings after day one yesterday, couldn’t hussle against the National U23 New Zealand team.

New Zealand Manager, John Fellet, was elated with the win, after competing in the same Championships last year and not getting close to a win.

“This win is just one more step in the ladder we are climbing.  Baseball has been going in New Zealand for about ten years with promotion of the game only taking off in the last two to three”.

“For the first time, the guys on this National Team are kids that have played T-Ball and have come up through the baseball pathway; not come across from cricket or fast-ball softball” said Fellet.

Fillet described the Australian National Under 23 Championships as unbelievably great baseball.

“Fantastic fundamentals.  Guys don’t make errors, they hit the ball even when you put them too high in the zone”.

“These champs are a real learning curve for our guts, but the win is an indication that baseball is growing and improving in New Zealand” said Fellet.

Australian Baseball Federation National Teams and Championships Manager, Mark Priestley said that Australian Baseball is very pleased to have New Zealand competing in our National Under 23 Championships. 

“It adds an extra dimension of competition to the tournament and we are looking forward to expanding this tournament relationship into other Australian Baseball events” said Priestley.

The National Under 23 Championships run through until Monday 9 April, at Southern Districts Baseball Club in Adelaide.
